– The Commissioner is presently receiving treatment at a Kaduna hospital
– The incident has saddened police officers in the state
– Commissioner Chukwu is said to be doing better after spending seven days in hospital
The Cable is reporting that Borno State Commissioner of Police Damian Chukwu has been hospitalised after he was injured by a Nigerian Army officer.
According to the report, Chukwu sustained an eye injury after he was elbowed in the face by an Army Colonel who was saluting state governor Kashim Shettima right inside the Borno state Government House.
Chukwu is said to still be at a Kaduna eye hospital where he is being treated for some days now.
A source said: “Officers of the Borno Police Command were all in a sad mood, following the incident.
“The CP was close to the Army Colonel at the time he was to salute Governor Kashim Shettima. His elbow mistakenly hit the right eye of the CP and immediately his eye became swollen and bloodshot.
“He was taken to a Kaduna hospital, where he stayed for some time to be treated. He has been in Kaduna for almost seven days now and he is now doing better.”
This is not the first time that a fracas is occurring between police and soldiers in Borno state right inside the Government House.
NAIJ recalls that almost a year ago, in 2016, officers of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force narrated how a clash between soldiers and police officers at the Borno state government house left a police officer seriously injured on Thursday, June 23, 2016.
In a joint statement signed by Col SB Kumapayi, commander of 7 division garrison (Operation Lafiya Dole) and Aminchi Samaila Baraya, the commissioner of police in the state, the secrutiy outfits said the incident left a policeman with a bullet wound on his foot.
The fracas occurred after soldiers were angered by police officers who prevented them from entering the premises where foodstuff was being distributed to residents.
They then reportedly opened fire on the police officers leading to the injury.
In anger, the police officers were said to have pounced on a soldier and beat him to pulp.
